The Traditional Balkan Coffee Pot
There are coffee makers, and then there is the džezva.
For generations across Serbia and the wider Balkans, this distinctive long-handled pot has been at the centre of the daily coffee ritual. The Metalac Red Džezva brings that tradition to Australia in the classic enamel design familiar to generations of Balkan households.
Made by Metalac in Gornji Milanovac, Serbia, this is cookware with genuine regional heritage. Metalac was founded in 1959, began working with enamel technology in 1960 and grew to become one of the best-known cookware manufacturers of the former Yugoslavia.
Today, Metalac continues to manufacture its cookware in Gornji Milanovac, with products exported to more than 30 countries – including Australia.
Made for Domaća Kafa
The džezva is designed for preparing the finely ground coffee known in Serbia as domaća kafa – literally, “domestic” or “home-style coffee.”
Unlike espresso or filtered coffee, finely ground coffee is prepared directly with water in the džezva. As it heats, the coffee rises towards the top of the pot before being poured into small traditional coffee cups.
The grounds aren't filtered out. Instead, the coffee is given a little time to settle in the cup before drinking.
It's a beautifully simple method that produces the strong, aromatic coffee associated with homes, cafés and family gatherings throughout the Balkans.
Pair your Metalac džezva with finely ground Doncafé, Grand Kafa, Zlatna Džezva or another traditional Balkan coffee for the complete experience.

More Than Coffee – It's the Ritual
Across the Balkans, offering someone coffee is a form of hospitality.
Someone arrives at the house.
“Kafu?”
The džezva goes on.
Coffee is prepared, cups come out and what was supposed to be a five-minute visit can quickly become an hour around the table.
That's why the džezva remains such a recognisable piece of Serbian and Balkan cookware. It's an incredibly simple object attached to generations of daily rituals, conversations and hospitality.
For Australians with Balkan heritage, a Metalac džezva can feel instantly familiar. For everyone else, it's an introduction to a completely different way of making and enjoying coffee.
