Ognjena Walnut Liqueur 700ml
Ognjena Walnut Liqueur 700ml
Ognjena Walnut Liqueur — locally known as Orahovača (orah = walnut) — is a traditional Serbian walnut spirit made by Ognjena Distillery, a family-run producer from Prijepolje in southwestern Serbia with deep roots in fruit brandy and infused spirits production. The distillery follows a time-honoured approach to crafting fruit spirits, controlled fermentation and double distillation in copper stills, before infusing young green walnuts to create this unique liqueur.
Unlike classic rakija, walnut liqueur is built around unripe green walnuts harvested in late spring — a technique similar in spirit to Italian nocino — resulting in a complex, aromatic profile filled with earthy, nutty richness, subtle herbal notes and a touch of spice.
In the glass, Ognjena Walnut Liqueur shows a deep amber to brown tone with pronounced aromas of fresh walnut shell, toasted nuts, gentle herbs and caramelised undertones. On the palate it’s smooth, richly textured and pleasantly warming, with a balance between sweet and bitter elements that make it excellent on its own or paired with coffee, dark chocolate and nutty desserts.
Traditional walnut liqueur plays a special role in Balkan spirit culture — it’s often served slightly chilled as a digestif after meals, appreciated for both its flavour and its heritage character.
Though walnut liqueurs are less commonly entered in spirits competitions than plum or grape brandies, Ognjena’s wider range of brandies and liqueurs have earned prestigious awards, including champions of quality at the Novi Sad Fair, long-term champions at the Plum Fair in Osečina, winners at fairs in Ugljevik and Gradačac (BiH), and recognition at CROAGRO in Zagreb and the IWSC in London, underscoring the producer’s reputation for quality across its portfolio.
