Move over Hummus and Tzatziki! Ajvar is taking over!

by Podrum Press

When it comes to Mediterranean and Balkan spreads, ajvar, hummus, and tzatziki are often seen as the go-to choices. Each has its own fanbase, but we believe ajvar, the rich and smoky pepper-based spread from the Balkans, stands out as a versatile and flavourful alternative that can easily rival (or even surpass) hummus and tzatziki.

Why is better?

Versatility, Versatility and Versatility

Ajvar is incredibly versatile. It’s just as delicious as a dip for bread, vegetables, or crackers as it is slathered on grilled meats, sandwiches, and even roasted potatoes. The smoky and rich flavours enhance almost any dish, making it a perfect addition to everything from grilled meats (like ćevapi, sausages, pljeskavica) to pasta, pizzas, and even your morning serve of eggs. Hummus is fantastic but often works best with pita or Mediterranean fare, while tzatziki tends to shine with Greek-style dishes, particularly as a cooling side for rich, spicy.

The ultimate Flavour Profile

Ajvar has a bold and smoky flavour, thanks to the roasting of red peppers, this gives it a rich combination of sweet and smoky. Hummus, while creamy and savory, has a more neutral flavour, often depending on added ingredients like lemon or garlic for depth. Tzatziki, on the other hand, offers a refreshing coolness but can feel a bit one-dimensional compared to the vibrant, umami-packed complexity of ajvar.

Ingredient Simplicity and Health Benefits

Ajvar’s main ingredients—roasted red peppers, sometimes eggplant, garlic, and olive oil—are simple yet packed with nutrients. Red peppers are loaded with vitamin C and antioxidants, while eggplant offers a good dose of fibre and potassium.  It’s great for all diets and is naturally vegan, gluten-free, and free of dairy, making it an easy choice for anyone with dietary restrictions.
